The Mother of all Implosions

Tom Mesereau took the Michael Jackson case, which most attorneys thought was a certain loser, with a mountain of alleged evidence showing the singer to be a serial pedophile.  He replaced Mark Geragos, who went on to what he thought was the stronger case -- Scott Peterson.  Mr. Peterson now sits on death row in California.  Mr Jackson, thanks in part to Tom Mesereau’s brilliant and thorough defense, is now likely not only to be acquitted, but also rehabilitated.  Mesereau has done such a breathtaking job that public opinion is actually swaying toward the belief that Mr. Jackson is actually innocent.  Now, Tom Mesereau wrings his hands with glee as he destroys the accuser’s mother’s testimony.

"The accuser’s mother has repeatedly drawn objections from the prosecution -- and it is a very rare thing indeed to see an attorney objecting to his own witness’ statements."

Janet Arvizo, the woman who sued J.C. Penney and Tower records over an alleged shoplifting by Mr. Jackson’s alleged accuser, is on the stand.  She has repeatedly played up to the jury, to the point where most jurors are visibly ignoring her testimony.  The accuser’s mother has repeatedly drawn objections from the prosecution -- and it is a very rare thing indeed to see an attorney objecting to his own witness’ statements.  The judge has repeatedly admonished Arvizo to stop grandstanding to the jury, and has ordered her to answer responsively.  She has for the most part ignored the judge’s orders.

She has testified that Mr. Jackson planned to "get rid of" her and her family by sending them off in a hot air balloon!  I kid you not.  Ron Zonen, an excellent attorney, was the assistant District attorney charged with rehabilitating her credibility.  To that end, he showed photographs allegedly of bruises and injuries suffered when the security guards in the J.C. Penney suit roughed her up.  She testified that she was beaten and suffered broken bones as a result.  In broad daylight in the middle of a shopping mall?  Yeah, right.

Tom Mesereau has yet to meet a witness that he did not destroy on the stand.  With this latest witness, we are seeing the mother of all implosions -- of the prosecution’s case.  Mr. Jackson should begin vacation plans for shortly after the prosecution rests, for it looks favorable for the judge to dismiss the case without his needing to put on a defense.
