A Wonderful Thing to See

Donna Brazile was Al Gore’s 2000 campaign manager.  She is no friend or closet-ally of our President.  She is a stalwart Democrat, a person who hails from New Orleans.  Considering the shrill and divisive tone on the present-day American Body-politic, one would expect her to rake our President over the coals for his Thursday night address.  Well, expectations were happily not met.  In a Washington Post Op-Ed, aptly entitled, "I will Rebuild with you, Mr. President,"  Ms. Brazile shocked and thrilled me.

"This op-ed was a rousing endorsement of our President’s plans."

Why?  This op-ed was a rousing endorsement of our President’s plans.  To quote Ms. Brazile, "I did not vote for George W. Bush -- in fact, I worked pretty hard against him in 2000 and 2004. But on Thursday night, after watching him speak from the heart, I could not have been prouder of the president and the plan he outlined to empower those who lost everything and to rebuild the Gulf Coast."  Some "conservatives," those to whom Rush would affectionately refer as the "two inch crowd," think that our President broke the bank and made LBJ look like a tightwad.  They would point to Donna Brazile’s statement as a liberal endorsement of a liberal plan.  Hogwash.

Our President’s plan is the epitome of conservatism.  Don’t hand people money and think that the cash is a panacea.  Instead, give them the skills to become independent!  Ms. Brazile, a resident of the disaster area, recognized the genuineness of President Bush, and his real desire to effect actual improvement in the lives of its residents.  He asked all of us to participate, but voluntarily.  He’s made it clear that he won’t raise taxes to fund this rebuilding.  He’s made it clear that the money is there to help people become independent of the government, something missing from the miserably-failed social programs of the 1960s.

"When I heard the President’s Thursday speech, I was expecting to see the left go apopleptic, and come out with all guns blazing.  In some responses, I got what I expected.  Nancy Pelosi was shrill as per usual.  However, my heart leapt to see a leading leftist like Donna Brazile support our President."

When I heard the President’s Thursday speech, I was expecting to see the left go apopleptic, and come out with all guns blazing.  In some responses, I got what I expected.  Nancy Pelosi was shrill as per usual.  However, my heart leapt to see a leading leftist like Donna Brazile support our President.  She has the guts to go against the grain of the Left and publish these words: "There are times when we feel so different from each other that we can hardly believe that we are all part of the same family. But we are one nation. We are a family. And this is what we do. When the president asked us to pitch in Thursday night, he wasn’t really asking us to do anything spectacular. He was asking us to be Americans, and to do what Americans always do."

Bravo!  Someone who realizes and recognizes the common sense, puts politics aside, and decides to help out a wonderful plan by our wonderful President.  Donna Brazile, I am with you and the President.  I congratulate your stand, and I compliment you as a real American.
