Immature Crybabies Pt. II: Blue State Secession?

Originally published on November 9, 2004.  Lawrence O’Donnell, a regular bickerer on The McLaughlin Group, has weighed in with his hissyfit over the election.  He predicted that within 20 years, lest the country return the extreme left to power, the "blue states," those of the liberal ilk, would secede from the union, leaving the "red states," the GOP states, to fend for themselves.  He noted a "fact," one which this author disputes but will research thoroughly, that 80% of welfare payments go into the red states.  I cannot locate a source for this rant, but it is irrelevant.  The actual fact that Mr. O’Donnell noted is that the Blue States pay more to the Federal Government than they receive, and all but three "Red States" receive more Federal money than they pay.  He then appears to draw the conclusion that this money differential, which is illusory as shown below, means that the Blue states should have the say of who comes to power, regardless of the will of the rest of the nation.  Secession is immature sore-loserism at its worst.  As Lincoln said in 1861, the notion that states can secede has the natural consequence of anarchy.

"The idea of leaving the United States rather than accepting the will of the People is tantamount to stomping upon the Constitution of the United States.  The last time the Democrats did this was to perpetuate slavery in the South."

The idea of leaving the United States, rather than accepting the will of the People, is tantamount to stomping upon the Constitution of the United States.  The last time the Democrats did this was to perpetuate slavery in the South.  Faced with the rising popularity of the abolitionist movement, and the election of Abraham Lincoln, the first GOP president and an avowed abolitionist, it became clear to the South that, were they to stay in the Union, they would be forced to give up their slaves.  Rather than accept the will of the people, and the inevitable declaration that people of color were not chattel but actual, God-created, equal persons,  the Democratic party tore the country in two.  The same thing is happening yet again if O’Donnell is prescient.

The Welfare Dole -- REVISED

Mr. O’Donnell’s comment, as Rush Limbaugh pointed out on November 12, shows the true colors of the Elite leftists.  They only want to help the poor when they are in power.  They want the government to deal with the unwashed masses so they don’t have to dirty their hands.  Remember that Connecticut is the most stingy state in the Union when it comes to charity; and one of the richest.  Mississippi is the poorest state in the union, and among the most conservative, but it is also the most generous.  This could be evidence for the proposition that a person’s generoisty and compassion varies inversely with his adherence to liberal dogma.

The idea that the red states are sucking up disproportionate amount of tax revenue versus that collected also has to do with the defense budget.  Liberals don’t like the idea of -- ick, poo -- military presence in their backyards.  So, the warships dock in Virginia and Florida.  They think that our strength is evil, and the vote themseves into "nuclear free zones" so the missiles are in the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming.  That means that the government "spends money in" these red states simply because the armed forces are stationed there so as not to offend the sensitive psyches of the elite leftists.

Were these Blue States to secede, there would still be no problem, because along with the stockpiles of weapons, the Red states produce most of the food for America.  The rebel nation would have to import its food from the remainder of the United States of America. Their dense populations guarantee that: a) They will consume far more food than the red states; and b) they will have insufficient land and fishery shoreline to support the food needs of their own people.  Thus, the money will still end up in the red states, and probably more of it, as supply and demand will escalate food prices in the Blue States.  So, will the Blue raise an army and try to take food from the Red by Force?  I think not, for we’ll have all the armies and nukes.  Even if they could, us "hayseed" red states let the people arm themselves, and here comes the militia to help repel the invaders!

Exactly How Blue are the Blue States?

"Let’s look at the 2004 red/blue map by county.  Even the Blue states are mostly red!"

Let’s look at the 2004 red/blue map by county.  Even the Blue states are mostly red!  Look at Michigan, which is essentially solid red except for Detroit and a small portion of the Upper Peninsula.  The eastern two-thirds of Wisconsin are GOP.  Illinois, except for Cook County, the St. Louis Metro area, and a small area around Peoria, is all GOP.  California, Oregon and Washington State are nearly all GOP!  Outside Long Island and New York City, substantially the entire state breaks for the GOP.  Look at Pennsylvania too.  Will the GOP counties then secede from their rebel Northern states and then choose to annex themselves to red states?  The only state where every county was blue is Hawaii, and that was by a small margin.  These people who are now talking secession, to me the selfish expression of ultimate immaturity, are ignoring the facts.  Secession is unlawful.  Even if it were, the states that putatively wish to secede would never vote to do so.  It’s one thing to cry over an election result; it’s another altogether to vote to rip your country apart.  I doubt that one in 10 democrats would vote to leave the union for any reason, and when it comes to the GOP, the number of anti-secessionists would rise to the edge of 100%.  Moreover, the Constitution would have to be amended to permit states to detach themselves form the Union.  Do you see three-fourths of the several states voting to allow a secession amendment?

Weapons and Power

The leftists would have another severe problem.  Virtually all conventional armaments of the United States of America, and to my knowledge all of our nuclear armaments, are located in GOP controlled states.  So are the shipyards and industrial wherewithal needed to support our armed forces.  Assuming for argument that the numerous legal hurdles to secession were all surmounted, then there is the fact that the remaining country would have no real power in the world.

"The Continental Europeans with whom the leftists now cavort would look down on these people as idiots with no power, and for once, would be accurate."

The USA would still be on the UN Security council, not this upstart rebel nation.  The USA would still be the most powerful military force in history; the rebel nation would have little to no armaments and near-zero world influence as a result.  The Continental Europeans with whom the leftists now cavort would look down on these people as idiots with no power, and for once, would be accurate.

Economy

The leftists assume that the Urban centers of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle control substantially all the wealth of America.  But, most of the manufacturing capacity of the United States resides in GOP strongholds.  The new auto plants are in Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, and South Carolina, among other places.  It would not be unreasonable to expect Ford Motor Company, the richest company on Earth to abandon Michigan and take advantage of the lower taxes in the USA, considering that most of its manufacturing capacity is no longer in blue states.  I would expect that numerous large companies headquartered in "blue states" would migrate to what would be a better and more hospitable business climate.  This will depress the economy of the rebel nation.

All of the oil in the United States is pumped out of GOP states. The tech centers of San Francisco/San/Jose and Seattle are complemented by tech companies in Utah, Texas, North Carolina, Florida and elsewhere.  The second richest man on Earth lives and works in Nebraska.  The world’s largest company is headquarted in Arkansas.  What would drive the economy of this rebel nation?  This is an important question, especially considering that the states that would comprise this seceded liberal-world have been bleeding off industry for decades, and secession would cause big business to run for the door.

"Without a robust economy, what would support the staggering taxes that would be needed to support this rebel nation? ... Democrats never think of where the money will actually come from; the failure of their first secession was due almost as much to its lack of economic viability as its lack of industrial base to manufacture war armaments."

Without a robust economy, what would support the staggering taxes that would be needed to support this rebel nation?  The Blue states are not conicidentally the ones who already tax their citizens into oblivion.  Democrats never think of that; the failure of their first secession was due almost as much to its lack of economic viability as its lack of industrial base to manufacture war armaments.  Democrats also believe in paying the poor not to work, and any rebel nation would rapidly collapse under its own ponderous weight.

Why even bother analyzing this?

The concept of secession crosses the line from immature to the truly bizarre.  When these people say that they would rather destroy the country than be out of power, the pure evil of such statements does not escape the common man.  We used to say that the liberal regards the common man as stupid; they would indignantly object to our "negativity."  Now, they are saying, directly, that which we said they felt all along.  I feel vindicated, as do Rush, Hannity, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, George Will, William F. Buckley and the rest of the throng who noted the objective truth years ago.

"The leftists badly lose the election; they therefore decry the people as foolish and stupid.  In so doing, the leftists prove those who voted them out of power to be wise."

I bother to analyze this because I want to illustrate the utter folly of these immature whiners.  The leftists badly lose the election; they therefore decry the people as foolish and stupid.  In so doing, the leftists prove those who voted them out of power to be wise.  Now they speak, with some seriousness, of tearing this country into two pieces rather than accept the will of the people.  And they look on in amazement when we say, as we have said all along, that these people dislike or even hate this country?  Do these people have no idea of reality?

Conclusion

The concept of the "blue states" seceding and forming a separate country is ludicrous beyond our ability to place it into words.  It is unfeasible on every level.  However, the mere fact that Michael Moore, the person who was accorded the seat of highest honor at the Democratic Convention, and Lawrence O’Donnell, among others have advocated this position shows their manifest hatred for America and its people.  If they are stupid enough to think that the people will not remember this ridiculous garbage come 2006, they ought to think again, hard.  The elite leftists have not bothered to even set forth their credo in any detail; they have refused to engage us conservatives in any actual debate; they have destroyed what little credibility they have left.

I mourn for these people, for they have committed political suicide, I will be sad as I constantly remind the public of their treachery as elections draw closer.  The elitist left has abandoned the marketplace of ideas and gone off to sulk because their fearmongering, demagoguery and sleight-of-hand did not succeed in buffaloing the people.  They think that they are ordained to power; to them it is their right, not a privilege bestowed by the people that needs to be earned.  The left advocates tearing this country in two rather than accepting the will of the people, who they have said, in no uncertain terms, are "dumb," "stupid," "ignorant," for failing to vote for their ill-defined, vapid agenda of hate.

I will continue to hope against all hope that the elite left finds its way back to sanity.  But, sadly, I express my pessimism.  There appears at this time to be too much growing up left to do.
